How do you use an electrical tester for car bulbs?

My headlights have been kind of wonky lately, and I’m not sure if they’re broken or not. I’d like to avoid going to the mechanic right away, so I’ve been looking into how to test them myself. Can you tell me how to use an electrical tester for car bulbs?

It’s not fun when you can’t depend on your headlights to work properly, especially in the dark! Using a multimeter is one of the best ways to take matters into your own hands, and save time and
money
.
Here’s what we know about using an electrical tester for car bulbs:
  • Black marks inside your bulb are a sure sign that it’s broken. If there’s no black, using a **multimeter **will help you test it.
  • Remove the glass or plastic cover in order to access your bulb. Then, unscrew the bulb out of its socket.
  • Your multimeter should be set to continuity mode. If you’re not sure whether it is, press the probes together and wait for a beeping sound to verify.
  • The black probe needs to be placed on the negative side of the bulb.
  • Press the red probe for a moment against the positive pole. If the bulb is in good shape, the multimeter will beep.
  • The multimeter will not beep if the bulb is broken.
Now that you know how quick and simple it is to test your car bulbs, you can get your headlight situation fixed in a jiff! Another way to simplify your life is to leave the hard work of looking for car insurance to the professionals.
