How do you turn off highways on Google Maps?

What do I do to turn off highways on my Google Maps? I know how to do it on Apple Maps, but I’ve had trouble with mine lately. I need to avoid highways on my morning commute or else it takes hours!

Avoiding highways can definitely be helpful, especially during the busiest hours of the day! Here are the steps you’ll need to take to avoid highways on Google Maps:
  • Open the Google Maps app.
  • Search for or select your destination on the map.
  • At the bottom left, tap Directions.
  • At the top, select Driving.
  • At the top right, select More, then Route options.
  • Finally, turn on Avoid highways.
You can also use this page to avoid tolls if that’s something you encounter frequently. This can be extra helpful on long drives when you’re traveling through lots of unfamiliar places—after all, hitting lots of tolls is a
road trip mistake
