How do you turn a car correctly?
I’ve been helping teach my younger brother to drive and realized I am awful at explaining even the most basic concepts. He’s been asking a ton of questions, and I want to help as much as I can but even struggled to explain the proper way to turn. So, how do you turn a car correctly?

That is very nice of you to help him learn how to drive, and you’re doing the right thing by also asking questions! Almost everyone could benefit from a refresher on proper driving techniques.
To properly execute a turn, you should do the following:
- Signal and slow down or brake before the turn. You should slow down to a safe speed and signal 100 feet before turning in a city or residential area and 200 feet on a highway or in a rural area.
- Scan the area for potential hazards and locate the center of the lane you will be turning into.
- Initiate your turn and only allow your hands to cross over each other if it is a sharp turn.
- Accelerate out of the turn once you pass the halfway point, and it is safe to do so.
When learning to drive and turn correctly, you should first practice in an open area free of traffic and pedestrians. To learn more ways to be a safe driver, consider taking a defensive driving course. Completing the course can even help lower your
