How do you travel with a dog in your car?
I just rescued a stray dog. He’s started to acclimate to his surroundings, so I’m excited about that. However, I road trip quite often during the summer and I’ve never brought a dog with me. What are some tips to travel with a dog in your car?

Going on a road trip with your dog is no simple task—at least, at first. But you can slowly get them up to speed.
To travel with a dog in your car, follow these tips:
- Buy a dog crate that’s large enough for your dog to turn around or lay down. Always make sure he or she is securely fastened. Driving with a dog on your lap or unsecured is dangerous and should be avoided.
- Practice letting your dog in the car and just sitting in the driveway. Slowly work your way up to short drives and then incrementally increase the driving distance once the dog feels comfortable.
- Reinforce good behavior with treats.
- Stop somewhat frequently for potty breaks and exercise.
- Make sure the car is well ventilated either by keeping a window down or aiming the air vents at the dog crate.
- Avoid feeding your dog before the trip, as this can lead to a bout of carsickness. However, you should keep your dog well hydrated throughout the trip.
