How do you transport a new car without license plates?
I just purchased a used car through a private sale, and the seller wants me to remove it from his property today. I haven’t had time to get plates for the vehicle and was curious how to transport it home without license plates?

In all 50 states, your vehicle is required to be titled and registered to the state. Once registered, the DMV will immediately provide you with license plates or have them mailed to you promptly.
If your license plates are being shipped to you, you can get temporary plates or a permit to drive the vehicle without plates from the DMV. Each state has a different process for issuing plates, so it is best to consult with your local DMV when registering the vehicle.
If you have not yet registered the vehicle, you need to visit the DMV to register the car and finalize the sale. When visiting the DMV, you will need the following:
- Your driver’s license
- The vehicle’s title
- A bill of sale
- A completed emissions test and inspection (if necessary)
Your state may require additional documentation or forms to be completed, so it is best to contact the DMV or visit their website to find out all the registration requirements for your state. Additionally, if you cannot register the vehicle yet, you cannot legally drive on the road and need to tow the car off the property.
