How do you transfer insurance from one car to another?

Can you switch your car insurance over to a different car? My car was totaled in an accident and I just replaced it. I never canceled my insurance policy, so I'd like to transfer my insurance from my totaled car to my new car. What should I do?

To
transfer insurance
from one car to another, you should call your insurance company. While some companies will allow you to add and remove vehicles online, it’s typically preferred that you call the company directly when making any significant changes to your policy.
Prior to calling, you’ll want to have the following information on hand:
  • Your vehicle identification number (VIN)
  • The make and model of your new vehicle
  • Your license plate number
Keep in mind: Since you still have an active
car insurance
policy, your new vehicle should be covered temporarily. Most states have a 14 to 30-day grace period after you purchase a new vehicle.
In other words, if you don’t automatically add your new vehicle to your policy, your coverage should transfer over to it for the length of the grace period. However, it’s always recommended to add your new car to your insurance policy as soon as possible.
