How do you thaw a car engine when it's frozen?

I live up by Saranac Lake, and a few days ago we had some of the coldest weather we’ve had in a while. No one was properly prepared, so I and a few neighbors have been having some car troubles–my engine seems to be frozen. How can I thaw my engine?

A frozen engine can be a real pain. Unfortunately, there isn’t too much that you can do to fix this problem immediately. The best thing you can do is allow your engine to thaw on its own. In cold weather, this can take multiple days.
If you can, have your car moved to a sheltered area. A parking garage or even a neighbor’s garage would be ideal. If you have access to a space heater, this could help circulate warm air around and through the car’s radiator and allow for a faster thawing time.
Although this situation is tedious, it’s important that you don’t drive the car while the cooling systems in the engine are frozen. This can cause extensive damage to the vehicle and ultimately result in a much bigger and more expensive set of issues.
When you’re certain that the engine has thawed, you will need to drain and flush out the cooling system and replace the coolant. In your climate, it is probably best to go for a higher-end coolant meant to withstand extreme temperatures.
