How do you take apart a car cigarette lighter?

What’s the best way to take apart a car cigarette lighter when it isn’t working? My car charger won’t charge my phone anymore. I know the issue isn’t the charger, my phone, or the fuse, so there must be something wrong with my cigarette lighter.

Electrical issues in the car can be tricky, but it should be easy to pull out your cigarette lighter and get it fixed! To take apart a car cigarette lighter, you should get a socket removal tool. If you can’t find one, a hook should be fine—though it may make your job a little more challenging.
Once you have your tool of choice, follow these steps:
  • Turn off your car to make sure the electricity’s off.
  • Fit your hook or socket removal tool into the grooves inside the socket.
  • Turn the tool sideways to start loosening the socket. You can use a pair of pliers to make it easier.
  • If you can’t get the socket out, take out any screws and use a pry tool to gently pop off the dashboard panel.
  • Locate the connector behind your cigarette lighter, and unplug it.
  • If you managed to take off the dashboard panel, fidget with the socket until it easily slides out.
Congratulations! If you followed these instructions, then you should have taken apart your cigarette lighter! Remember, your car is a complex machine, and electrical issues can come from many different problems. It may be best to let a professional deal with your car’s cigarette lighter.
