How do you take a car off of insurance?

I just bought a new car and am going to use my old one for parts and to teach my kids mechanic skills. Obviously, if I’m taking it apart, I don’t need to insure it anymore. How do I take it off my policy?

That sounds like lots of fun for you and your kids! To take your old car off of your policy, you’ll need to call your insurance provider and check with your local DMV.
Your insurance agent can walk you through the process of transferring your insurance to the new car so that you avoid a
lapse in coverage
. You will need to provide some information about the new car, like its:
  • Make
  • Model
  • Year
  • Safety features
  • Vehicle identification number (VIN)
Some states require that you also surrender your old car’s license plate and registration to the DMV. Because of this, it’s important to check in with the DMV and ask if there are any other steps you need to take.
If you are unsatisfied with the policy on your new car,
