How do you suspend your car insurance?

I'm going out of town for a few months to take care of a relative and I can't bring my car with me. I'm storing the vehicle in my garage, but I was wondering, can I suspend my insurance while I'm away?

Suspending your
car insurance
policy while out of town is a smart idea and can save you from having to pay for temporarily unnecessary coverage.
Not all insurance companies will permit you to suspend your policy, so contact your insurer as soon as possible to see if it’s an option. Some will only allow a suspension if the reason meets specific criteria.
If your vehicle is financed or leased, the insurer will most likely deny your request. Keep in mind that if you suspend your policy, your car isn’t insured against risks like fire, animal damage, vandalism, or theft.
If the insurer denies your request to suspend coverage, an alternative is to reduce your coverage or list yourself as a non-driver on the policy. Avoid canceling your policy. Otherwise, your
lapse in coverage
could increase your future car insurance rates.
No matter what you decide to do, shop around and compare car insurance quotes to avoid overpaying, especially for a policy you won’t truly be needing.
