“To shop around for car insurance, you’ll need to
request quotes
from several different insurance companies. Experts recommend getting at least three quotes—the more, the better.
When doing so, be sure to provide accurate information (i.e., your correct date of birth, the vehicle type, etc.), or your rate could change once you finalize your policy.
You’ll need to indicate the
type of coverage
you require, as well. Again, if you don’t select the proper coverage, your rate could change.
For example, if you need full coverage, don’t request quotes for
liability coverage
, which is typically the minimum amount of insurance required by law. Full coverage costs much more, so the previous quote wouldn’t provide a good idea of how much you’ll end up paying.
Compare the quotes you receive carefully. Beyond price and coverage, you also want to look at the policy terms and conditions. If you know you may cancel your policy midterm, you’d benefit from one that didn’t include cancellation fees.
If you’d rather leave the hard work of gathering quotes to someone else, use
