How do you sell a used car in NYC?

What’s the best way to sell a used car in New York City? My friend said it was a confusing process when they sold their car. I want to make sure I know what I’m getting into before I sell my car.

Selling a car
can be a complicated process, but try not to worry. As long as you stay organized and focused, it shouldn’t be too challenging! Follow these steps to sell a used car in New York City:
  • Step 1: Gather your documents. The documents required for selling your used car will include a recent Safety and Emissions Inspection report, the original title, and a lien release (if applicable).
  • Step 2: Fill out an Odometer and Damage Disclosure Statement. Also known as Form MV 103, you can find and print it online.
  • Step 3: Complete a Bill of Sale. You can get the Bill of Sale form (Form MV-912) online or from the DMV. Required information includes the car’s year, make, VIN, date of sale, purchase price, and the buyer and seller’s full legal names and signatures.
  • Step 4: Transfer the title. You can do this by following the instructions on your car title and having the buyer complete the transfer section. You have to have the
    title notarized
    as well.
  • Step 5: Statement of Transaction. The buyer and seller must complete Statement of Transaction forms (Form DTF-802) and submit them to the DMV.
If you follow those steps, selling your car should be a piece of cake! Remember, you’ll need to remove your license plate and take the car off your insurance policy once you’ve transferred ownership. Otherwise, you could be held accountable for damages or unpaid premiums!
