How do you sell a car in Michigan?

I live in Michigan and want to sell my car. I do not have a lien or car loan on the car—I’m the sole owner. What do I need to do?

To sell a car in
Michigan
, you’ll need to start by locating your car’s title.
If you can’t find your title
, you can get a duplicate with your local Secretary of State (SOS) branch. Fill out the following information on the title:
  • Odometer reading
  • Sale date
  • Sale price
  • Signature
It’s best to go with the buyer to an SOS branch office to complete the sale, where you will need to bring:
  • The title
  • Identification
  • Proof of Michigan insurance
The buyer will need to sign and write their name and address on the proper title documents in the buyer section. Once the sale is complete, you will also need to remove your license plate from the car before handing it over to the buyer.
If you are unable to go to the SOS together, create a
bill of sale
and hold onto it for 18 months.
Don’t forget to
cancel your insurance for the car you’ve just sold
. When it comes time to get insurance for your next car, make sure you’re getting the best rate by comparison shopping with the
