How do you restore cracked leather car seats?

I own an 18-year-old car and, besides the typical wear and tear for a car that old, it’s in great mechanical shape. However, the leather seats have started to crack and get worn out. Is there a way I can restore the leather seats?

Great job maintaining your car for so long! Don’t worry; this is something you can fix at home.
To rejuvenate your leather seats, do the following:
  • First, clean the leather seats and let them dry completely.
  • Next, apply leather filler using a plastic applicator or small spatula. Do your best to smooth the filler out so it is level with the rest of your seat.
  • Once dry, gently sand the filler down to smooth it out and make it flush with the seat.
  • Finally, apply leather dye using a soft sponge applicator. If you can still see some cracks once it has dried, apply a second coat of filler or dye until you get the results you are looking for.
If the damage is more severe or extensive, consider having your seats restored professionally or reupholstered. A repair can cost as little as $35, while reupholstery is typically $250 to $750, dependending on the severity, material, and number of seats that need to get repaired.
