How do you reset the brake light on a BMW?

I had the brakes on my BMW serviced just a couple of days ago. I think the mechanic must have forgotten to reset the light because my brakes work like a dream but the service light hasn’t gone away. What can I do to reset the brake service light on my BMW?

If your brake light is still hanging around even after your brakes have been properly serviced, resetting the warning yourself would be the next logical step. However, you should be sure that there isn’t some sort of underlying issue with your brakes before turning off the brake light.
If you are sure that your brakes are working properly, you can reset the brake light on a BMW by following these steps:
  1. Turn on the car but do not start the engine (enter accessory mode). If your BMW has a START button, press it without depressing the brake pedal.
  2. Hold down the ODO reset button until you see a yellow triangle on the dash.
  3. Press the ODO reset button a few times until you see the symbol for front or rear brakes.
  4. When the symbol for the desired brakes is displayed on the screen, press and hold the ODO reset until the word RESET appears.
  5. Release the button, then press it again and continue holding until the brake light disappears.
  6. The miles should change to a dash or dashes, indicating the reset was performed successfully.
Now that your pesky brake service light is gone, you can drive with a bit more peace of mind knowing that your brakes are in good condition. But if the warning appears again, be sure to take your BMW back to your mechanic for further diagnostics.
