How do you reset a BMW service light?

I got my brake pads replaced about a week ago but the service light on my BMW 6-Series won’t go away. What can I do to reset it?

Oftentimes, when you get brake pads replaced on a BMW, your brake pad wear sensor will not go off unless you reset it.
Here’s what to do:
  • Turn on the ignition but do not start the car. If you have a push-start BMW, press START without pressing the brake pedal.
  • Press and hold the ODO (odometer) reset button for about 5 seconds. Initially, a yellow triangle will appear on the dash. Continue holding the button until the next symbol appears.
  • Press ODO reset a few times until you see the symbol for rear or front brakes. Whichever brake pads were replaced are the ones that need resetting.
  • Press and hold the ODO button when the symbol for the desired brakes is displayed. Hold until you see the word RESET. Quickly release the button, then press and hold again until the service light disappears.
If you had both sets of brakes replaced, you may need to do this more than twice. If the service light returns, have your BMW checked by a mechanic—the issue may be more serious.
