How do you reset a BMW E46 ECU?

A friend told me that I need to reset my electronic control unit (ECU) in order to fix some problems that I’ve been having lately. I thought the procedure would be simple, but I can’t figure out what I have to do. How do you reset a BMW computer to factory settings?

I’m sorry to hear that you’re having trouble with your car! There are a couple of ways to reset your
BMW
E46 ECU:
  • Disconnect your negative battery cable for 10 to 15 minutes, then reconnect it.
  • Disconnect both battery cables and allow them to touch for 5–10 seconds.
If none of this works, you might need to talk to a mechanic to figure out what’s going on with your car!
While you’re taking the time to reset your ECU, why not take an extra minute to check out your insurance options with the
