How do you replace the serpentine belt on a car?

I’ve been hearing loud squealing noises coming from under the hood of my car and my steering wheel has been feeling stiff. I think I need to replace the belt on my car, but I don’t have time to bring it to a mechanic before I need to hit the road again. Can I replace the belt on my car myself?

Oh no! With the symptoms you described, it does sound like you need a belt replacement. Luckily, with the automatic drive belts in today’s vehicles, replacing the serpentine belt is fairly simple and should only take about 15 minutes.
To replace the belt, follow the steps below:
  • Using a serpentine belt tool, rotate the tensioner pulley to remove belt tension
  • Remove the old belt
  • Route the new belt around the belt path
  • As you load the belt around the path, continue rotating the tensioner
  • Wrap the belt around the crankshaft pulley and grooved pulleys
  • Slide the belt onto a non-grooved roller
  • Slowly release the tensioner
The serpentine belt should now be working properly! If you have any further concerns or issues with your belt, bring your car to a professional mechanic.
