How do you replace the battery in a Toyota RAV4 key?

How do you change the battery in a key fob? My key currently only works when I'm right next to the car, so I think it just needs a new battery.

Replacing the battery in your Toyota RAV4 key will require a CR2016 battery if you don’t have a smart key and a CR1632 if you do have a smart key.
Here’s how to swap out the old battery for the new one:
  • Make sure your hands are dry.
  • If you have a smart key system, remove the mechanical key first.
  • Next, remove the plastic cover on your key fob using a flathead screwdriver to pry open the case.
  • Carefully remove the dead battery, then insert the new one with the + terminal facing up.
If you’re worried about more serious mechanical failures on the road (your car’s battery dying, for instance), check out the Jerry app. With Jerry in your pocket, you’ll never have to worry about being stranded again. Jerry’s roadside assistance includes jumpstarts, lockout service, key replacement, and towing.
