How do you replace the battery in a Toyota RAV4 key?

How do you change the battery in a key fob? My key currently only works when I'm right next to the car, so I think it just needs a new battery.

Replacing the battery in your Toyota RAV4 key will require a CR2016 battery if you don’t have a smart key and a CR1632 if you do have a smart key.
Here’s how to
swap out the old battery
for the new one:
  • Make sure your hands are dry.
  • If you have a smart key system, remove the mechanical key first.
  • Next, remove the plastic cover on your key fob using a flathead screwdriver to pry open the case.
  • Carefully remove the dead battery, then insert the new one with the + terminal facing up.
