How do you replace BMW brake pads?

My brakes have been making a lot of noise. I figure that I probably need new ones. I have some experience working on cars, so I don’t want to pay to have them serviced unless the process is super difficult. How do you install new brake pads on a BMW?

It can be a little complicated to replace
BMW
brake pads, so don’t hesitate to ask a professional for help if you need to. But if you are up to the challenge, you can install new brake pads by following these steps:
  • First, loosen the lug nuts on your tires.
  • Put your car on jack stands
, then remove your front tires completely.
  • Using a flathead screwdriver, pry off the brake pad sensor.
  • With the screwdriver or a pry bar, remove the anti-rattle clip.
  • Then, loosen and remove the two bolts located at the end of the brake caliper with a 7-mm Allen wrench.
  • Once you’ve done this, you should be able to remove the brake caliper. If you need to, you can use a flathead screwdriver to help you pry it out.
  • Using a C-clamp, push the caliper piston back into the caliper.
  • Now you can remove the old brake pads and attach the new ones to your caliper.
  • Finally, reinstall your caliper and reattach your tire.
  • Lower your car back to the ground, then tighten the lug nuts on your tires as much as you can.
  • Make sure to test your brakes before you drive your car to check that they are working properly!
