How do you replace a Ford F150 headlight?

I have had my truck for a few years, and the headlights are not illuminating the way they used to. I want to change out the bulbs, but I can’t see how to do it. How do you replace the headlights in a Ford F150?

If you have already
cleaned your headlight assembly
to get rid of build-up and your lights still seem dim, replacing your bulbs with LED or brighter white ones can make a big difference. But you’re right—how to do it is a little less obvious in a Ford.
To replace a
Ford F150
headlight, you need to start by taking off the plastic cowling and the headlight assembly.
You will need a couple of
basic tools
, like a socket wrench and a screwdriver. Whether you want to replace the bulbs or the whole assembly, here are the steps for each headlight:
  • Open the hood and remove the two screws holding the plastic cowling (engine bay cover) in place. Remove the cowling and set it aside.
  • Locate and pull up on the two retaining tabs that hold the headlight assembly in place.
  • Wiggle the headlight assembly and gently pull it forward away from the vehicle.
  • On the back of the assembly, unscrew the retainer ring that holds the bulb in place.
  • Unplug the connector and remove the bulb from the assembly.
You can now replace the bulb, the assembly, or both. Once your new part is installed, reassemble the pieces in reverse order and you are all set!
