How do you renew a US driving license when living abroad?

I’ve been living abroad for a few months now, and I realized my US driver’s license is going to expire soon. Is there a way for me to renew it without having to go back to the states?

Renewing your driver’s license can be a hassle even when you live near a Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office, so it’s understandable why you would be confused about how to renew your US driving license when living abroad. The answer will actually depend on what state you lived in.
Technically, there’s no such thing as a US driver’s license, since all driver’s licenses in the US are issued by state agencies. That means that you’ll need to contact the DMV for the state you lived in to find out what procedure you should follow to get your license renewed, or you can find out how to exchange it for a license in the country where you currently reside.
