Ensuring your documents are valid before traveling is a good idea to prevent being denied boarding. There are four options to renew your Michigan
driver’s license: online, by mail, at a self-serve kiosk, or in-person. Michigan driver’s licenses can be renewed up to one year before expiration and are valid for 4 years.
To renew your license online:
Visit the Michigan DMV website for license renewal and click “Go to Online Services*
Login to the online portal or create an account
Follow the license renewal instructions
Note: You’ll need your current license number, the last four digits of your SSN, and an accepted method of payment to renew online.
To renew your license by mail use the return envelope to send the renewal notice, required fee made payable to the State of Michigan (check or cash) and send your application to:

To renew your license at a self-serve kiosk, you’ll need to have your current license renewal notice, the last four digits of your SSN, and payment.
Note: A $3.95 service fee will be charged for each transaction if you’re renewing at a self-serve desk.
To renew your license in person, visit the Michigan DMV website and schedule an appointment at your local office. You’ll need to bring your current license and the applicable fee.
