How do you remove tinted film from car glass?

I’ve decided to remove the tint from one of my windows—it’s made it difficult to see others, and sometimes makes it hard for others to see me. However, I don’t want to damage my windows, so how can I remove the tinted film from my car glass safely?

Great question! I’m happy to say that removing the tinted film can be done in a few easy steps. Here’s how to do it:
  • Roll your window down about a quarter of an inch. You want it lowered enough that you are able to reach the top of the window and see the edge of the tinted film.
  • Open your vehicle door so you can access the inside of your car’s window.
  • Use a handheld clothing or upholstery steamer to steam the window. Start with the outside and work your way in, holding the steamer 1-2 inches away from the window. Work in long, sweeping motions from top to bottom.
  • Use a straight razor to lift up the edge of the tint. Carefully slide it underneath the tint at one inside top corner of the window. This will make it easier to peel off.
  • While continuing to steam, peel the tint slowly. Pull the tint from the top of the window toward the bottom. Keep applying steam to loosen the film, and continue peeling until the film is gone.
  • Remove any remaining adhesive with one part commercial cleaner and one part water in a spray bottle. Spray it on and scrub the glue spots with a non-scratch pad.
With that, you should be all set!
