How do you remove the battery from a Toyota key fob?

The buttons on my car’s key fob stopped working the other day. I’m assuming it just needs a new battery. I picked up a replacement from my local auto shop. How can I take out the old battery in my Toyota remote?

When the battery dies in your car’s key fob, it can be pretty inconvenient. Fortunately, replacing the battery is simple, and the process shouldn’t take more than a few minutes.
To remove the battery from a
Toyota
key fob, you’ll need a pry tool like a flathead screwdriver (unless a physical key is stored in the fob).
Once you have a pry tool, here’s what to do:
  • Remove the physical key, if applicable.
  • Locate the pry notch. It should be at the base of older fobs or at the top of the key storage area on newer fobs.
  • Gently pry the two pieces of the fob apart using the pry tool or physical key.
  • Remove the old battery insert the new one.
  • Press the two halves together until they click into place securely.
Hopefully, replacing the battery gets your key fob working again! However, if the fob still isn’t functioning, you’ll need to purchase a replacement, which isn’t cheap. Replacement fobs are typically $200 to $350 but could cost less for older vehicles.
