How do you remove static electricity from car paint?

What’s the deal with all this static electricity? I tried to do a hot pink DIY paint job on my wife’s car on my day off and didn’t get very far. I’m trying to surprise her before she gets back from a work trip. Can you tell me how to remove static electricity from car paint?

What a wonderful surprise! That sounds frustrating, especially when you set aside the time to do this project.
An imbalance of electric charges on the surface of a material can cause static electricity. It can also be caused by two surfaces coming in contact with each other. As far as cars go, when you rub the panels in preparation to paint, it can result in negative and positive charged electrons on the panel.
Here’s how to remove static electricity from
car paint
:
  1. If you’re experiencing static while you’re painting your car, change the polarity of the panel’s charge to make it more even. To do so, use ionized air.
  2. Use an Anti-Stat gun like the StarFinish Anti Static Gun to fire negatively charged ions in an airflow right onto the panel.
  3. If your car with highly polished paint generates static electricity, water does act as a natural neutralizer. However, this may not be a car owner’s first choice as it could result in scratches or swirls in the paint.
Now that you’re better equipped to take on your DIY project, make sure your wife’s car is also equipped with the best car insurance on the market. If you’d rather spend your weekends cruising the canyons in your hot pink ride, leave the hard work of gathering quotes to someone else.
