How do you remove duct tape residue from a car exterior?

My kids decided to put up an art gallery on my car. It was cute, but now it's time to clean up. How do you get duct tape off car paint?

To remove duct tape residue from your car’s exterior, you should spray it with WD-40 and wipe it off.
There are many other options for getting rid of the stickiness too, but you should be careful to use materials that won’t damage your paint.
Specifically, you should never use:
  • Scrapers
  • Alcohol
  • Rough cloths
Scrapers can chip away at your paint, and alcohol might cause it to fade. While rough cloths aren’t as damaging, you may leave behind bits of fabric that make it more difficult to clean.
If this incident stressed you out, you may want to take further steps to protect yourself from real vandals.
