Tie rods connect steering components to the steering knuckle and removing them involves a wide set of tools and raising your car.
These are some tools that will come in handy when removing tie rod ends:
  • Jack and jack stands
  • Blocks or wheel chocks
  • Socket and wrench
  • Penetrating oil
  • Tie rod puller (available at auto parts stores)
  • Inner tie rod removal tool (available at auto parts stores)
  • Pliers
  • Torque wrench
  • Flathead screwdriver
Removing tie rod ends is a somewhat complicated and tedious process; if you don’t feel comfortable doing this yourself, you can always get a mechanic to do it for you. The following are some of the general steps involved with removing the tie rod ends:
  • Park your car on a level surface, then place in park and engage the parking brake
  • Use blocks or wheel chocks to help keep your vehicle in place
  • Use your jack and jack stands to lift the vehicle
  • Remove the wheels to access the tie rod ends
  • Spray tie rod nuts and bolts with a penetrating oil (this helps with corrosion)
  • Loosen outer tie rod nut
  • Remove cotter pin and castle nut
  • Use tie rod puller to separate the outer tie rod end from the steering knuckle
  • Remove outer tie rod end from inner
  • Remove the inner tie rod nut
  • Remove the inner tie rod end
