I’m sorry to hear about your windshield! Trees and branches are some of the most common causes of cracks in windshields, along with rocks.
Removing your car’s windshield is a big job, but if you’re sure you want to do it yourself, be careful and follow these steps:
  • Remove the trim around the windshield. If you find any clips or fasteners under the rubber, save them for future use.
  • Cut out the old windshield glass with a guitar string, stiff wire, or urethane knife. Your windshield has a layer of urethane that connects the glass to your car. Cutting the adhesive will release the windshield.
  • Apply primer to the metal behind the urethane as you cut it. You’ll likely scratch it as you remove the windshield, so the primer helps maintain its integrity. Priming the metal will be especially important when you decide to install the new windshield.
While these steps should help you through the removal process, you’d be better off leaving it to a professional. Removing an old windshield is challenging, and dealing with a large piece of cracked glass can be dangerous.
