How do you redo lacquer car paint?

What can I do to redo or fix the clear lacquer paint on my car? It’s peeling in a few spots. It looks really bad, but I don't want to spend the money on a professional job.

Peeling paint is a frustrating problem—but try not to worry! There are plenty of ways to fix up your paint, from touch-ups to full-on professional paint jobs. Follow these steps to fix your lacquer paint coat:
  • First, sand down the peeling or damaged area with 1,000 grit sandpaper. Be careful not to
    damage the colored paint
below the clear coat. If the lacquer is gone entirely, you can skip this step.
  • Next, soak some 2,000 grit sandpaper in water for one hour. Use this sandpaper around the edges of the part you sanded before to transition the damaged area to the rest of the clear coat.
  • Clean the area using an alcohol-based cleaner (like glass cleaner), then use a solvent-based paint prep cleaner on the area.
  • Tape off the area that you’re repairing to prevent overspray.
  • Now, use an aerosol can of clear coat to spray the area. Be sure to spray from 6-8 inches away.
  • After five minutes, apply a second coat.
  • When your clear coat is dry, use 2,000 grit sandpaper to blend the area with the rest of the clear coat.
Congratulations—your paint should look good as new!
