How do you recharge the A/C on a 2005 Honda Civic?

I’m hoping to recharge the A/C on my 2005 Honda Civic myself since I’ve been having trouble keeping my car cold lately. I want to make sure that I do it right, though! What’s the best way to recharge an A/C on a 2005 Honda Civic?

Recharging the A/C system of a 2005
Honda Civic
can be a little complicated, so it’s great that you’re doing your research first. Here’s what you’ll need to do:
  • First, buy a freon recharging kit from your local auto parts store.
  • Once you’ve got your recharging kit handy,
    open the hood
of your Civic and find the low-side port in your engine block. It should be near the front of your car on the driver’s side, but you can check your owner’s manual if you have trouble finding it.
  • Connect the coolant canister included in your kit to the low-side port as instructed by the recharging kit you chose.
  • Then, start your Civic and let it run until the engine heats up, or about five to 15 minutes.
  • Once your engine is warm, turn your A/C to the highest setting and wait until it reaches a consistent temperature.
  • It’s a good idea to open all your doors and windows to make sure that your A/C doesn’t turn off once your car interior cools down.
  • Then, return to the front of your car. Open the valve on the coolant canister to release coolant into the system. Do this for three to five seconds every minute until the canister is empty.
  • Then, shut the valve and disconnect the canister from your car. If you need more coolant, you can connect a new canister to the port and continue filling your Civic.
  • Once your A/C system can reach 40 degrees F, your A/C is fully charged! When you’re done, make sure to disconnect your recharging kit, shut the low-side port, and close the hood.
If you have any more problems with your A/C or feel these steps are a bit too complicated, it’s best to call a professional to help you out.
