How do you put car insurance on hold?

I’m going to be overseas for a couple of months. Is it possible to put my insurance on hold while I’m gone?

Taking a trip overseas is exciting! Understandably, you don’t want to pay for any additional expenses while away—especially when you won’t be driving your car.
In most situations, you can’t put your insurance on hold, but you’ll have to talk to your car insurance to confirm. Some states and companies allow you to suspend your insurance coverage to avoid a lapse of coverage in certain situations.
If it isn’t possible to put your insurance on hold, you have a few options:
  • Reduce coverage to liability insurance for lower premiums
  • Opt for storage coverage
  • Cancel your policy until you return
You also have the option of shopping around to find a lower rate while you’re gone. Although you’d still be paying for coverage, you could be paying less with another company.
