How do you protect yourself from a car accident?

How do you prevent or reduce the chances of getting in a car accident? I am 20 years old, and I got my license when I was 17. Even though I have been driving for a few years, I am still pretty new to it and would love to learn some safe-driving tips.

It’s great that you’re seeking out ways to be a more responsible driver. The reality of the situation is that we cannot predict when car accidents will occur, but we can do our part to be as safe as possible and reduce the risks associated with driving.
Here are some tips to protect yourself from a car accident:
  • Stay up to date on maintenance to keep your vehicle in good condition. Make regular service appointments. If your car is operating without any issues, you will reduce your chances of losing control of your vehicle and causing an accident.
  • Obey traffic laws and speed limits. Rules are in place for a reason. They were established in the best interest of protecting you, other drivers, and pedestrians.
  • Do not drink and drive. To ensure you are alert and able to make sound decisions, do not consume alcohol or drugs that can impair your judgment prior to getting behind the wheel.
  • Do not use your phone while you are driving. Using your phone or tablet can distract you from focusing on the road.
  • Don’t drive if you are drowsy. If you are sleepy, pull over to a safe area and take a nap for at least 10 minutes. You will be refreshed and more alert after.
  • Be mindful of the weather before you drive. If the forecast predicts ice, snow, rain, or other conditions that could impact your ability to drive safely, consider staying home. However, if you must drive, exercise precautions such as stopping earlier than usual and keeping a greater distance between you and other vehicles.
Asking questions and learning what preventive measures you can take to drive more safely means you are well on your way to becoming a responsible driver! As an added benefit, your car insurance company may reward you for as much. Ask your insurer about available
