How do you protect your battery in winter?

My battery died last winter due to the cold—I didn’t even know that was a possibility. What can I do to protect my battery this winter?

Having your battery die on you can be a shock, but yes, there are a few things you can do to try to protect it from the cold.
The best thing you can do is to park your car in a garage whenever possible. If you have to park outside, try to avoid windy spots.
Another thing to try is to be patient when you turn your car on in the morning. Don’t let it idle, per se, but wait a minute between turning on the ignition and the heat.
Finally,
visit your mechanic
before winter comes. They can make sure your battery isn’t experiencing any other problems and perform a general tune-up to keep your engine running smoothly.
In speaking of wintertime problems, it’s always a good idea to invest in a roadside assistance plan in case you get stranded.
