How do you polish a car with a buffer?

How do you use an electric buffer to polish a car? My kids got one for me for my birthday, but I have no idea how to use it without damaging my paint job.

Answer
You shouldn’t need to worry too much about damaging your paint job while polishing your car with your new buffer! Most electric buffers have an internal mechanism that will slow the polishing pad to a stop if you apply too much pressure.
To use the buffer effectively, just follow these steps:
  • Make sure to wash your car thoroughly first.
  • Apply a small amount of liquid wax to the polishing pad on your buffer.
  • Without turning on the buffer, use the polishing pad to spread some of the wax onto a small area of your car.
  • Turn on the buffer and pass over the area in long, sweeping strokes using light pressure.
  • Once the wax dries, use a clean microfiber towel and wipe in straight lines until you remove the wax from your car.
