How do you paint your car engine?

Is there a good way for me to paint my car engine? My friend said it was looking pretty worn out, and I was thinking a paint job could make it look a little nicer.

Engine blocks are one of the hardest things in your car to maintain. Luckily, you can make it look like new under your hood by following these steps to paint your car engine:
  • Start by removing the engine from your car.
  • If you’d rather leave the engine in the car, start by removing the battery (beginning with the negative lead).
  • Wash the engine with a cloth, brush, and degreaser. Any paint you apply to a dirty area will chip off within weeks. To make sure your paint job lasts, get rid of as much dirt and grime as possible.
  • Wipe down the engine with a microfiber cloth to get rid of any remaining degreaser.
  • Next, tape off all openings, electrical components, screws, or nuts on the engine block that you want to avoid painting.
  • Cover the transmission as thoroughly as possible.
  • Put on gloves and a respirator so you don’t breathe in any chemicals.
  • Use a heat resistant vehicle primer to prime your engine.
  • Let the engine dry for 1-2 hours to ensure the primer is evenly applied.
  • Spray the engine with a heat-resistant enamel paint. You should apply 2-3 layers, leaving a full 24 hours for it to dry between sprays.
  • Untape the engine and put it back in your car or remove the covers and reinstall your battery (starting with the positive lead).
If you followed those instructions, then congratulations! You just painted an engine. But if it seems like too much work, you can leave this job to a professional. Just call
a local auto shop
and ask for an estimate.
