How do you paint a car hood step by step?

My hood is pretty messed up so I need to get it repainted and buffed. If possible, I’d like to do it myself and avoid paying a mechanic. What’s the best way for me to paint my car hood? Step-by-step instructions are welcome!

Worn hoods are common problems, especially in older cars. While painting sounds like an easy job, repainting your car hood can be challenging.
Follow these steps to successfully paint your car hood:
  • Step 1: Cover your grill, engine block, and windshield with a tarp. You don’t want paint or other materials finding their way into your engine.
  • Step 2: Sand your hood with low-grit sandpaper and then go back over it with high-grit sandpaper. Keep sanding until the entire hood is smooth. Remove the sanding dust with a rag and degreaser, and let it dry.
  • Step 3: Apply a coat of primer by spraying one stripe at a time, starting near your windshield and working your way toward the bumper. Repeat the process twice to get a solid base layer.
  • Step 4: Spray 3-4 layers of paint on the hood. Make sure you spray in the same pattern with each round. Wait until the paint starts to dry before applying a new layer.
  • Step 5: Apply a few layers of clear coat to protect the hood from scratches or other minor damages.
  • Step 6: Let it dry and remove your cover from the engine.
Congratulations—you just painted a car hood! The process may sound simple enough on paper, but you should know it’s a fairly labor-intensive process. If you aren’t up for the job,
