How do you open your car when your keys are inside?

I was in a rush and locked my keys in my car when I got to work. Thankfully, I have all day to figure out how to get back into my car, but I’m not sure what to do! What are some tricks people use to get back into their cars when their keys are locked inside?

I’m sorry to hear that you’re
locked out
, but I’m happy to say that there are more than a few ways to open your car when your keys are inside. The two surefire ways are to either call your
car insurance
provider or to call a locksmith. If you have roadside assistance with your policy, the cost of a locksmith may be covered—so contacting your insurance provider is a good place to start.
If your insurance provider can’t help you out, here are some other methods to try:
  • The tennis ball. Make a hole in the tennis ball and place it over the keyhole. Push down hard on the ball, and the forced air should unlock your car.
  • If your car has a pull-up lock mechanism, use your shoelace. Make a small loop, gently push the shoelace through the door and around the lock. Pull up, and your door should unlock.
  • If your car has a horizontal lock, use a wire hanger. Form a hook with the hanger and work it into the door. Get the hook around the lock and pull.
If you don’t feel adequately supported by your insurance provider during this lockout, it might be a good idea to take a moment to shop around for a new one once you’ve gotten back into your car. If you want to do this easily, try checking out the

Best of luck—you’ve got this!
