While cleaning out my garage the other day, I could’ve sworn I heard some squeaking and scratching from under the hood of my car. I’m a bit scared to check what it is, but I know I have to. How can I open the hood of my 2013 BMW X5?

Oh no–you should most certainly take a careful look under the hood! Hopefully, it was nothing, but it’s best to check and make sure.
- Pull the hood release lever on the left-hand side of the driver’s footwell near the dead pedal. The hood will lift a few inches.
- Walk to the front of the car.
- Feel around under the center of the hood and press the hood release latch.
- Lift the hood and secure it using the prop rod.
If you discover something underneath the hood, you should carefully remove whatever it is if possible and visit a mechanic to ensure there isn’t any hidden damage.
