How do you open the gas tank on the 2018 Ford Fusion?
I’ve been tasked to car-sit my brother’s 2018 Ford Fusion while he’s gone on his trip. Lucky for me, I was also allowed to drive it around! I figured I should top up his gas before he comes back, but I just can’t find the button to open the gas tank door. Please help!

As for filling up the tank, there isn’t a button or lever inside the 2018
Ford Fusion
to open the gas tank door, which is why you couldn’t find it. It is a bit of an inconvenience, but you will need to get out of the car to open it instead:- Unlock the Ford Fusion.
- Locate the gas tank door on the driver’s side.
- Press the edge of the door so that it springs open.
- You should find the gas tank capless. This is Ford’s Easy Fuel system.
- Fill up your tank and close the door, pressing the same area to lock it in.
Sometimes the gas tank door can get stuck—this is especially common if the vehicle isn’t in good condition. Below are common causes of this issue:
- Lubrication needed on the hinge
- Hinge is misaligned or bent
- Rusted hinge or door
- Faulty locking mechanism
- Issue with the door springs
If the door is stuck, don’t force it open as you could damage the car. While it’s a nice gesture to fill up the tank before your brother comes back, waiting for him to get home and take the car to a dealership would be the best plan!
