How Do You Open the Gas Tank on a Honda Civic?

I rented a Honda Civic while my car is in the shop for a few days, and I know I’ll need to refill the gas tank before I return it to the rental company. But I can’t figure out how to open the gas tank! Any idea how to open the gas tank on a Honda Civic?

How you open the gas tank on a
Honda Civic
depends on what model year the Civic is, as the gas tank fuel door mechanisms change slightly from year to year. Just in case, we’ve included gas tank directions for both newer and older Honda Civics below.
For 2015-2020 Civics:
  • Step one: turn off the engine, get out of your car, and close the driver’s door.
  • Step two: unlock your car and walk to the rear of the driver’s side of the vehicle, where you’ll find the fuel door.
  • Step three: Push the fuel door in as if it were a button. This should trigger the door to open and expose the fuel cap.
  • Step four: Unscrew the gas cap to access the gas tank. Once you finish refueling, simply push the fuel door back into place to close it.
For 2004-2014 Civics:
  • Step one: locate the fuel door release lever on the floor to the left of the driver’s seat.
  • Step two: push the handle towards the floor to release the fuel door.
  • Step three: exit your car and walk around to the fuel door on the driver’s side, where the fuel door should be open. Once you’re finished refueling, push the door closed to secure the door back in place.
