Excellent question! Opening the gas tank on a Ford Ranger is very simple, but the process does vary slightly depending on the vehicle’s model year. We’ll cover a couple of generations just to be sure.
If you own an older model Ford Ranger (1982-2012), you can open the gas tank
by pulling open the fuel filler door using the small upraised tab and unscrewing the gas cap. Place the cap’s tether on the hook attached to the inside of the filler door while you are refueling. If you own a Ford Ranger built between 2013 and 2018, the gas tank can be opened by pressing in on the edge of the fuel filler door. It will automatically spring open part way. Unscrew the gas cap (it turns counterclockwise).
If you own a newer model Ford Ranger (2019-2023), you may have a fuel filler door with an upraised tab or a fuel filler door with the pressure latch and spring-loaded hinges. Once you have the door open, you should see the fuel filler tube. There is no gas cap to remove, as modern Ford vehicles use a fuel valve to seal the tank shut.
When you are done refueling, make sure to screw the gas cap back into place (unless you have a capless refueling system) and firmly shut the fuel filler door to latch it.
