How do you open the gas tank on a Chevrolet Malibu?

I just bought my friend’s old Chevy Malibu from him, and I can’t figure out how to get the fuel door open. My friend will definitely laugh at me if I ask him, so hopefully you can help! How do you open the gas tank on a Chevy Malibu?

Opening the gas tank on a
Chevrolet Malibu
is simple, but it might not be obvious at first. Unlike some vehicles, the Malibu doesn’t have a fuel button or lever inside the cabin, so you’ll be opening your gas tank from outside the car.
Once you pull up to the gas pump, here’s what you should do:
  • Exit the car and leave the doors unlocked since the fuel door won’t open if your doors are locked.
  • Walk around to the rear passenger side of the car and locate your gas tank.
  • Push the left side of the fuel door to trigger the spring-release and wait for it to open.
  • Unscrew the gas cap to reveal the fuel nozzle and begin filling your car.
Don’t forget to reattach your gas cap and close the fuel door when you’re done! Leaving your gas tank open allows bits of dirt and debris to enter your fuel tank, which can cause problems like an air leak or reduced fuel economy, and might even damage your vehicle’s fuel injectors!
