How do you open the gas tank on a BMW X5?
I’m currently driving a rental BMW X5 while my car is in the shop for repairs, but I can’t figure out how to get the gas tank open. Any idea how to open the gas tank on a BMW X5?

We totally understand—navigating rental cars can be a bit of an adjustment! The BMW X5 has a sleek gas tank fuel door that often confuses drivers, so you aren’t alone in your struggles. Follow these easy steps to open the fuel door on a BMW X5:
- Step one: walk to the rear end of the passenger’s side of the car, where you’ll find a rectangular cut-out in the X5’s body. This is the fuel door.
- Step two: Gently press the far side of the fuel door as if it were a button. This will trigger the fuel door to open.
- Step three: Unscrew the gas cap underneath the fuel door to access the gas tank. Now you can fuel up as per usual!
The X5’s range is about 570 miles depending on its
gas tank size
. Even so, be careful not to let your fuel gauge reach “E” before refueling, and think about investing in towing and labor coverage
for when disaster strikes and you need fuel delivered to you on the roadside. In general, BMWs are super fun to drive, but keep in mind that you’ll often pay high
