How do you open the gas tank on a BMW 550i?
I’m on a solo business trip, and my boss decided to surprise me with a rental BMW 550i to drive while I’m here. I’m loving it so far, but I can’t figure out how to open the gas tank. Any pointers?

What a sweet rental ride! There are so many different manufacturers out there, and each has its own way of opening the gas tank. Fortunately, it’s the same in almost all
BMW
models. To open the gas tank on a BMW 550i, all you have to do is push on the gas door and it should pop right open! You’ll need to make sure your Bimmer is in park and unlocked first. This functions to keep any tricksters from meddling with your gas. Your BMW 550i’s gas tank probably holds around 18 gallons of fuel, but this will depend on what year model you drive. On average, you’ll probably get around 20 miles per gallon in your 550i—but that also depends on a wide range of factors, like the specific model you drive, where you drive it, and how you drive it. No matter what, you could probably stand to reduce your fuel consumption…and there are a few easy ways to do it:
- Refrain from sudden acceleration or quick braking.
- Try not to idle, if possible.
