How do you open the gas tank on a 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan?
I just picked up a used 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan I bought from a dealership. It needs gas, but I can’t figure out how to open the fuel tank door. Is it a button inside or something else? How do you open the fuel door on a 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan?

To open the gas tank door on a 2017
Volkswagen Tiguan
, push the fuel door on the left side and it will pop open. Once released, you can unscrew the gas cap and fill the tank.Be mindful that if your Tiguan is locked, you may need to unlock your vehicle to release the fuel door; a locked car will lock your fuel tank, too.
Once you get the fuel door open, it’s easy to fill up your tank. But did you know that improving your Tiguan’s gas mileage is also easy? Although it doesn’t come in a hybrid powertrain, there are simple ways to get more for your money:
- Accelerate gently. Hard acceleration quickly burns gas and increases wear and tear on your Tiguan’s engine. Ease onto the gas pedal for smooth acceleration and fuel savings.
- Stick to the speed limit. Speeding burns more gas. For example, for every 5 mph over 50, you’ll pay an additional $0.15 per gallon for gas. Slow down to save!
- Use cruise control to maintain a steady speed. Unnecessary acceleration and heavy braking can reduce your fuel efficiency.
- Stick to the manufacturer’s recommendedcar maintenance schedule. Keeping up with regular maintenance allows your car to perform in optimal condition. Under-inflated tires can decrease your vehicle’s gas mileage by up to 3%.
- Drive smarter. Speeding, heavy acceleration, and hard braking burn a lot of gas and can reduce your mileage by up to 33% on the highway and 5% in the city.
- Avoid idling. If you’re parked for more than 30 seconds, turn off your engine to avoid wasting gas. The average vehicle with a 3.0L engine burns 0.3L (about one cup) of fuel for every 10 minutes of idling.
