How do you open the gas tank on a 2006 Ford Escape?

I feel silly for asking this, but how do you open the gas tank on a 2006 Ford Escape? This seems different from my old car and I can’t figure it out!

Different vehicles have varying methods for how you can access the gas tank, so it’s natural that it might be confusing to figure out on a new car! Even on the
Ford Escape
, the gas tank fuel door setup has changed over the years.
Here’s all you need to do to open the gas tank on a 2006 Ford Escape: just pull on the raised outer edge of the fuel filler door to open it. From there, you should be able to unscrew the fuel filler cap and add more fuel to your tank.
On later models, you’d have to press the fuel door release button found to the left of the steering wheel before opening it. On 2020 and later models, that button was phased out and replaced with a door that you just press in on to make it pop open. However, neither of these are the case for the 2006 Ford Escape.
If for some reason your 2006 Ford Escape’s fuel filler door is stuck shut, it might be worth enlisting the help of a mechanic to help you open it and avoid damaging the door.
When you do get that gas tank door open, be sure to verify that full tank is paired with the right

policy!
