How do you open a Honda Civic hood?

I’m trying to keep up with the maintenance on my Honda Civic EX, so I want to check the fluid levels under the hood and top them off. However, I’ve never popped the hood in my life. How do I open a Honda Civic hood?

Learning to do
basic car maintenance
can be a big undertaking, but it’s a great way to save money! If you want to top off fluid levels, you can open the hood on a Honda Civic by lifting the hood release lever under the driver’s side dash.
If you’re not sure what it looks like, it’s a pull lever that’s labeled with a picture of a car with the hood open. It’s located above the driver’s side floorboard on the left side of the dash. Just pull the lever toward you, and you’ll hear a clunking noise that signifies you’ve popped the hood.
Once you hear the noise, go to the front of the car and follow these instructions:
  • Feel underneath the front edge of the hood for the hood latch. You may need to use a flashlight if you have trouble locating it. Then, undo the latch.
  • After the latch is undone, lift the hood—but don’t let go.
  • Use the support rod to keep the hood raised. The support rod is a metal piece located along the left side of the engine compartment.
  • Put this support rod in the hole on the underside of the hood, which is marked with a small arrow.
Once you’ve topped off your fluid levels, remove the support rod and lower the hood until it’s almost closed. Let go of the hood and let it slam. This will ensure that it fully latches and the hood is secure again.
