“Good for you for being proactive—especially if you’ve been seeing some heavy storms lately. There are a few things you’ll need to do to submit a successful flood insurance claim.
The appropriate steps include:
Reporting the damage to your flood insurance provider as soon as possible. The insurance representative responsible for your claim will schedule an appointment to inspect your property shortly thereafter, and the company may be able to provide an advance payment on your claim.
Limiting the damage by keeping it from getting worse. Cut off water supplies, cover any leaks, and remove valuables.
Making a list of damaged or destroyed property. This inventory of your belongings will help when it comes time to submit the claim to your provider.
Holding on to defective items as proof of damage for your claims.
