How do you make a flood damage claim?

Where do I start if I need to file a flood insurance claim? I’m really worried about all these storms popping up and want to be prepared in the event water damages my property.

“Good for you for being proactive—especially if you’ve been seeing some heavy storms lately. There are a few things you’ll need to do to submit a successful flood insurance claim.
The appropriate steps include:
  • Reporting the damage to your flood insurance provider as soon as possible. The insurance representative responsible for your claim will schedule an appointment to inspect your property shortly thereafter, and the company may be able to provide an advance payment on your claim.
  • Limiting the damage by keeping it from getting worse. Cut off water supplies, cover any leaks, and remove valuables.
  • Making a list of damaged or destroyed property. This inventory of your belongings will help when it comes time to submit the claim to your provider.
  • Holding on to defective items as proof of damage for your claims.
Note that your home insurance provider may not be your flood insurance provider. You may have purchased flood coverage through the National Flood Insurance Program. If you have questions about specific policies, your best bet is to reach out to your insurance company directly.
And if you’re looking to shop for new insurance or to save money by bundling your home and auto insurance policies, download the Jerry app. Jerry will collect quotes from up to 50 top insurance companies in seconds and deliver cheap quotes directly to your phone.”
