How do you leave your car door open without draining the battery?

We’re moving this weekend and I’m worried about draining my car’s battery by having the door open during the move. How can we leave our car door open without draining the battery?

Answer
Moving is always better as a team, so best of luck! To leave your car door open without seriously impacting your battery, you’ll need to look at the age of your car and its battery health.
If you have an older car and battery, leaving your door open will drain or kill your battery. Although interior lights turn off at a certain point, an older battery has less power available. Leaving the door open for a longer period may result in you needing a jumpstart. To help prevent the draining, you can either get a new battery or remove your interior lights.
However, if you have a newer car or battery, you likely won’t have any issues leaving your car door open. Your interior lights will turn off at a certain point and the power they draw from your battery won’t be enough to require a jumpstart. If you’re nervous, consider starting your car and letting it run every so often while you move. Doing so will ensure your battery recharges.
Should your battery need a jumpstart, it never hurts to have roadside assistance coverage with your car insurance. If your car insurance company doesn’t currently offer it, consider using the Jerry app to find coverage.
